Analyzing Split Channel Medium Access Control Schemas with ALOHA Reservation

چکیده
In order to improve the throughput performance of Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes in wireless communication networks, some researchers proposed to split the single shared channel into two subchannels: a control subchannel and a data subchannel. The control subchannel is used for access reservation to the data subchannel over which the data packets are transmitted, and such reservation can be done through the use of the dialogues such as RTS/CTS (Ready-ToSend/Clear-To-Send) dialogue. In this paper, we evaluate the maximum achievable throughput of split-channel MAC schemes that are based on RTS/CTS dialogues with pure ALOHA contention resolution mechanism. We derive and calculate numerically the probability density function (pdf) of the contention resolution periods on the control subchannel. We then apply these results to calculate the throughput of the splitchannel MAC schemes, which we then compare with the performance of the corresponding single-channel MAC schemes. Our results show that, when radio propagation delays are negligible, the maximum achievable throughput of the split-channel MAC schemes is lower than that of the corresponding single-channel MAC schemes in the scenarios that we have studied. Consequently, our results suggest that splitting the single shared channel of the MAC scheme in a wireless network should be avoided. Simulation results are presented to support our analytical results.

متن کاملAn Integrated Services MAC Protocol For Local Wireless Communications - Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on
This paper proposes a medium-access control (MAC) protocol for integrated voice/data services in local wireless communications. The proposed protocol is a hybrid of R-Aloha and Aloha reservation adapted to local wireless environment. In the proposed hybrid Aloha-reservation/R-Aloha (HAR) protocol, data messages are transmitted using Aloha-reservation protocol, whereas voice packets are transmit...
متن کاملA Decentralized Scheduling Algorithm for Time Synchronized Channel Hopping - (Invited Paper)
Time Synchronized Channel Hopping (TSCH) is an existing medium access control scheme which enables robust communication through channel hopping and high data rates through synchronization. It is based on a time-slotted architecture, and its correct functioning depends on a schedule which is typically computed by a central node. This paper presents, to our knowledge, the first scheduling algorit...

متن کاملPacket Switching in Radio Channels: Part 111-Polling and (Dynamic) Split-Channel Reservation Multiple Access
Here we continue the analytic study of packet switching in radio channels which we reported upon in our two previous papers [ 11, [2]. Again we consider a population of terminals communicating with a central station over a packet-switched radio channel. The allocation of bandwidth among the contending terminals can befixed [e.g., time-division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency-division multip...
